Soundproof Acoustic Wood Wall Panels: Do Slat Walls Block Sound?

Updated

A soundproof acoustic wood wall panel is wood or veneered MDF slats glued to a felt backing, and it's the felt that does the absorbing. Lab NRC runs from 0.55 flat on the wall to 0.95 on furring with insulation behind it. These panels cut echo well but don't block much, because at about 1.9 lb/sq ft they're lighter than a single layer of 5/8 in. drywall. Buy them for the look and the echo, not for the neighbors.

What's inside a soundproof acoustic wood wall panel

A wood slat panel has three layers: hard slats on the face, a porous felt backing, and whatever air gap or insulation you mount it over. Take Primacoustic's ECOScapes Slat Wall: it's 0.47 in. (12 mm) MDF slats with a wood veneer over a 0.35 in. (9 mm) PET fiber core (product page (opens in a new tab)).

Cross-section seen from above: sound passes the wood slats through the gaps, the PET felt backing absorbs it, an air gap or fill on furring strips adds bass absorption, and the wall behind still does the blocking; the same panel rates NRC 0.55 flat and 0.95 on 2 inch furring with fill
The slats are just the finish. The felt and the space behind it do the absorbing.

Solid wood by itself bounces most sound right back. In impedance-tube tests of 11 mm solid fir, absorption ran from 0.03 at 250 Hz to 0.09 at 1,500 Hz (Krhen et al., Materials, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). So the gaps between the slats matter more than what kind of wood they are.

Do wood soundproof panels block noise?

Wood soundproof panels block very little noise. Blocking comes down to mass and an airtight build, and a slat panel is light and porous. The ECOScapes panel weighs 9.11 kg/m² in its Riverbank lab report (opens in a new tab), which works out to 1.9 lb/sq ft.

Example: In USG lab tests (opens in a new tab), a second layer of 5/8 in. drywall on an insulated 2x4 wall took it from STC 34 to 37. That layer weighs 2.2 lb/sq ft (USG (opens in a new tab)), which is more than the slat panel, and it was continuous and sealed. Expect less than those 3 points from a slat wall.

Old-school plank or sheet paneling doesn't do any better; is wood paneling good for soundproofing runs the numbers. For noise from next door, the soundproof panels guide covers the mass, decoupling and sealing that actually work.

How much echo do wood slat panels absorb?

Wood slat panels soak up mids and highs well, but they're poor on bass unless you mount them over a gap or insulation. Every maker's lab number depends on that mounting, so read the test conditions right next to the NRC.

Absorption classes run from A, the highest, down to E under EN ISO 11654 (Ecophon (opens in a new tab)). So WoodUpp's jump from D to A comes entirely from the battens and mineral wool. Do slat walls absorb sound has the full mounting comparison, bass included.

Wood soundproofing panel options

Three different products get sold as wooden soundproofing panels, and they absorb very differently.

  • Slats on felt

    NRC 0.55 to 0.95

Real veneer or MDF slats on PET felt. The mounting decides the number.

  • Woodgrain felt

    NRC 0.45

All felt, with a woodgrain finish and V-cuts, 1/2 in. thick (Acoufelt (opens in a new tab)).

  • Solid paneling

    Under 0.10

Planks or plywood with no felt behind them. It's a finish, not an acoustic product.

Fire ratings are all over the map too. Primacoustic's felt backing is rated Class A under ASTM E84 (owner's manual (opens in a new tab)), while The Wood Veneer Hub's sheet says its engineered panels carry no fire rating. If you're buying for a commercial space, check the E84 class first.

Installing wood soundproof panels

Wood slat panels go up with screws through the felt, with construction adhesive, or with screws into furring strips. Only the furring adds absorption. Primacoustic calls for at least 20 screws per panel and 1x2 furring at 23.5 in. when you want the air gap.

How to install wooden acoustic panels has the full method, including cutting around outlets. Hanging a TV on a slat wall takes a solid spacer and longer bolts into the studs; see how to install a TV on acoustic wall panels. There are more answers in the soundproof panels FAQ.

FAQ

Does the type of wood change the sound absorption?

Not enough to matter. In the 2025 study, solid 11 mm fir stayed under 0.10 and even pine drilled with 20% open holes topped out at 0.20, way below a slat panel on felt (NRC 0.55 or more). So it's the felt, the gaps and the mounting depth that decide the result.

Can I put insulation behind wood slat panels?

Yes, and it's the biggest upgrade you can make. Screw 1x2 or 2x2 furring into the studs and fill the cavity with glass wool or PET felt before the panels go on. Deeper fill soaks up more bass.

Do wood slat panels help with bass?

Only if there's depth behind them. At 125 Hz the ECOScapes panel absorbed about 0 flat on the wall, 0.29 on 1 in. furring with fill and 0.59 on 2 in. furring with glass wool (Riverbank reports linked in the table).

Are felt-only "wood look" panels as good as real slats?

Pretty close when both are flat: 1/2 in. woodgrain felt rates NRC 0.45 and a real slat panel flat on the wall rates 0.55. Put real slats on furring with fill, though, and they pull well ahead.
